Courtney and Tom's Brooklyn Wedding

Courtney and Tom were married in a fun, personal, and intimate ceremony at Grand Ferry Park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Many people don’t know this, but New York City makes it very easy to get a permit to hold your wedding in a city park or other public space, so anyone who applies can get married with a stunning view of the skyline behind them.  The only catch is that the park doesn’t close for the ceremony, so strangers are likely to gather around to watch.  I am a huge fan of weddings in public spaces (it’s what we did, so I’m definitely biased), but it takes a special type of couple to have one.

Courtney and Tom were certainly special. Their wedding was a relaxed, joyful, fun, and slightly nerdy affair. (My favorite kind!) Courtney wore a custom red wedding dress with green details and red sneakers. Tom wore a grey suit with blue and burgundy accesories.  Tom's mom made their flowers, and all the flowers for the reception. They each picked out an engraving inside the other’s ring as a surprise. Inside his, it said, “I chose you to be my family.” Hers had the chemical symbol for Oxytocin, the love hormone.

They got ready together, had a first look near their apartment, and travelled around their neighborhood with me taking photos.  We even stopped at one of their favorite bars for some photos and a pre-wedding drink.  During their ceremony, which included an officiant who also plays in a metal band, references to Bell Hooks, and a ring warming with a small group of friends and family, they didn’t seem to notice the small crowd of tourists and park-goers that had gathered. They were too busy staring at each other.

After their wedding, they headed to Cubana social for drinks, amazing Cuban food, cupcakes, heartfelt toasts, and lots of dancing.

I’m so glad I got to be a part of this day. Congratulations, Courtney and Tom!!!!
